Antenna Deployment for the Localization of Partial Discharges in Open-Air Substations

چکیده
Partial discharges are ionization processes inside or on the surface of dielectrics that can unveil insulation problems in electrical equipment. The charge accumulated is released under certain environmental and voltage conditions attacking the insulation both physically and chemically. The final consequence of a continuous occurrence of these events is the breakdown of the dielectric. The electron avalanche provokes a derivative of the electric field with respect to time, creating an electromagnetic impulse that can be detected with antennas. The localization of the source helps in the identification of the piece of equipment that has to be decommissioned. This can be done by deploying antennas and calculating the time difference of arrival (TDOA) of the electromagnetic pulses. However, small errors in this parameter can lead to great displacements of the calculated position of the source. Usually, four antennas are used to find the source but the array geometry has to be correctly deployed to have minimal errors in the localization. This paper demonstrates, by an analysis based on simulation and also experimentally, that the most common layouts are not always the best options and proposes a simple antenna layout to reduce the systematic error in the TDOA calculation due to the positions of the antennas in the array.

Separation of Radio-Frequency Sources and Localization of Partial Discharges in Noisy Environments
The detection of partial discharges (PD) can help in early-warning detection systems to protect critical assets in power systems. The radio-frequency emission of these events can be measured with antennas even when the equipment is in service which reduces dramatically the maintenance costs and favours the implementation of condition-based monitoring systems. The drawback of these type of measu...

In this paper a microstrip antenna on a suspended substrate with capacitive feed is presented. capacitive feed is created by a slot within the rectangular patch around the feed point. The proposed antenna exhibits a much higher impedance bandwidth of about 47% (S11 < −10 dB). Effects of key design parameters such as the air gap between the substrate and the ground plane, the gap width between r...

Abstract – In this paper, the effect of applied electric field on the damage due to partial discharges activity into the surroundings dielectrics of a narrow channel encapsulated within the volume of a dielectric material is evaluated using a kinetic model based on Particle in Cell - Monte Carlo Collision (PIC-MCC) model. After application of an electric field across a dielectric material which...

In this paper, a miniaturized coplanar waveguide fed (CPW-fed) tapered slot antenna (TSA) is introduced for breast cancer detection. Here, a modified CPW to slot-line transition structure with an air-bridge is employed to broaden the transition bandwidth and increase the radiation efficiency. Through these applied modifications, negative features of the original TSA (limitation of transition) a...
متن کاملDevelopment of A Compact and Low Profile Cavity Backed Slot Antenna Using Microstrip Gap Waveguide Technology
Proof of concept of a cavity backed slot antenna based on inverted microstrip gap waveguide (IMGW) technology is presented. Since the antenna is operating based on the first resonating mode of the cavity, it is more compact compared to the ordinary cavity backed slot antennas in which the second cavity mode is used for radiation. Furthermore, the proposed antenna element introduces lower lo...
